Críticas:
[Turnstones 1] is focused primarily on developing writing and language skills, with some excellent knowledge about language integrated into the programmes. A welcome aspect of the content is its use of modern Scottish writers, as both source and exemplar material, throughout the series of activities. The text also contains a specific section entitled 'Pittin it in Scots', which will please supporters of the language, and the section is usefully reinforced at various stages of the book. ...the book is comprehensive in its coverage. The topics covered reveal the writers' familiarity with S1 - personal feelings, biography, being bullied - and this strength of the book means it could be used easily in conjunction with many existing schemes of work. ... Overall, the book presents a set of good, and in some cases very good, writing units which have clearly come from classroom practice and an understanding of what tends to work and what doesn't. -- TES Scotland 20020315
Reseña del editor:
This is the first book in a new series which will be written to closely match and follow the English syllabus in Scotland, the first text to do so. Spirals 1 is written for S1 which is the first year of secondary school in Scotland. The 'Spiral' name is chosen because the authors have used two different yet connected approaches to teaching. They want the book to remain as flexible as possible, with teachers able to 'navigate' their own route throughout. This means that the chapters aren't necessarily in the order that they will be taught. The skills that are to be taught are reading, writing, talking and listening. Most tasks have been designed to include more than one of these skills rather than setting them as linear, separate items. Spirals 1 will be an ideal companion for students following this course in Scotland. Spirals 2 will follow on for students in S2, and there will be accompanying teachers' materials, currently planned to be supplied on CD.
