Soft Cover/Stapled. Condición: New. Robert Casilla (Illustrator) Ilustrador. First Edition, 2nd Printing. Text/NEW & Bright. 1993 First Edition, 2nd Printing. Stapled softcover/Fine. History. Biography of superlative Black American track & field athlete James Cleveland "Jesse" Owens (1913 ? 1980), and a biography of American social history. Jesse, grandson of a slave, and the youngest of 10 children parented by Oakville, Alabama sharecroppers. Re-counted by David A. Alder, illustrated by Robert Casilla. In 1935, at 22 years old, within an hour, Jesse set 3 world records at the Big Ten track meet, Ann Arbor, Michigan ? hailed by many as "the greatest 45 minutes ever in sport". Then, the very next year, Jesse won 4 gold medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany to be celebrated as the black- American who "single-handedly" crushed Hitler's myth of "Aryan supremacy". Jesse's homecoming heralded w/parades in Chicago & New York City. At that time, before World War II, he was, of course, not even able tooccupy front seats of buses. Jesse proves to be a forerunner beyond the world of sports. In 1950 he was named the all-time greatest track-and-field star by the Associated Press; in the bicentennial year 1976, President Gerald R. Ford awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and, in 1987, President Jimmy Carter honored him w/the Living Legends Award. An outstanding athlete & an outstanding American, all young, and old, Americans should be familiar with. Fine copy.
