The Food Bank Britain - Tapa blanda

"As a schoolboy of 15, I, like many of my schoolfriends, watched the terrible news reports of the starving in Africa, the impact of drought, war and poverty on the lives of the young and the elderly who never knew from one day to the next if they would eat, live or die." This imagery motivated Ray Woolford Barron and his schoolfriends to help. "We decided to give up our summer holiday and rollerskate to Plymouth, supported by War on Want and each other. We spent every weekend and after school practising road skating, securing sponsorship and media coverage. Plymouth was the only council that would help and welcome us and what we were about." Ray had no way of knowing then that 40-odd years later he would be setting up a food bank just 2 miles from the City of London to feed working people who - due to high rents, welfare reforms, utility bills and food prices, along with low pay - were rummaging through the bins, looking for discarded food. Food Bank Britain is his story, and one that Ray hopes will challenge bigotry, ignorance, and bring about real political change whilst raising funds to fund his We Care food bank and advice and support centre, their summer school holiday meals programme and Give a Christmas appeal.

Ray is a community activist and the founder of We Care food banks, a non-profit organisation dedicated to charity work and fighting poverty.
