Send Me No Flowers is the story of a young woman's fight for survival.

Donna Stewart's family is poor but respectable and hard working. Donna is beautiful and clever - about to go up to university. Celebrating her exam results with her friends at a club, she meets Danny Lester, ten years older, much richer, a businessman - he sweeps her off her feet. Despite warnings from friends and family, Donna enjoys Danny's wild streak. She believes this is the man she will marry and live with happy ever after. But it gradually emerges that 'Danny the knife' is a dangerous criminal - and a sadist. She is introduced to a world of drugs and prostitutes, where Danny gets his kicks by terrifying her. The longer she leaves it, the harder it will be to escape. But eventually, helped by a loyal circle of female friends, she works out a plan.

The Stewarts are a close, loving family. They live in a run-down area of the East End, but Ian and Joyce have steady jobs, their house is immaculate, they have a holiday abroad every year and their three children are doing well.

Donna, the middle one, has been a star pupil at the local school, captain of the netball and rounders teams, and she has very
worked hard for her exams . When she's rewarded with top A-level results, she goes out to a local club to celebrate with her friends.

Donna is leggy with long dark hair and sparkling blue eyes, but she's been too busy studying to pay much attention to boys. Then at the club she meets Danny Lester. He's ten years older than Donna and he impresses he because he is obviously a man of the world with plenty of money to splash around - a refreshing change after her parents' very careful attitude to money. She finds him exciting to be with, even enjoys his slight air of danger. She thinks she deserves a little fun after all her swotting, and Danny sweeps her off her feet.

Her family are worried. Her friends drop hints. They think Danny might be bad news. But Donna quickly falls deeply in love, and comes to believe that this is the man she will marry and live with happy ever after.

It gradually emerges that Danny has some criminal connections. When Donna questions him, he hits her. Danny, it turns out, is sadist who gets his kicks by terrifying her.
