Ian Norrie was a ubiquitous presence in the London publishing world for some 50 years, principally as the proprietor for 32 years of the independent High Hill bookshop in Hampstead; he made the shop a centre of the north London village's fashionable intellectual life. Norrie was also a busy journalist and author, writing some 20 non-fiction works and four novels. An occasional reviewer for The Daily Telegraph and a columnist for The Bookseller and Publishing News, he held so many forcefully expressed opinions that he was known (sometimes with a hint of asperity) as "the Sage of Hampstead".
