Edward finally escapes, writing to Isobel as he returns to France in 1915. But the letter goes missing and, heartbroken, she is led to believe that Edward has been killed. In France, Edward, who is still very much alive, understands from a mutual friend that Isobel has met someone else. In response, he throws himself into fighting and at Ypres experiences the horrors of Passchendaele. As peace is finally declared, Isobel and Edward s struggle to remain true to each other during their long separation moves to a tragic and ironic finale.
