First printing of the "new and cheaper edition" (making this the third printing, overall) October, 1908. Folding map with author's route marked in red in excellent condition still firmly attached at rear. Traveler, explorer and archaeologist in Palestine, Arabia, Syria and Asia Minor, born into a wealthy and politically influential family, Gertrude Lowthian Bell (1868-1926) with T.E. Lawrence helped support the Hashemite dynasties in what are today Jordan and Iraq, building up enough influence over British imperial policy-making in the region that she was able to help create and administer the modern state of Iraq.
