Borchardt vede nella sua storia di Pisa, fin dalle origini, lo svilupparsi di un tipo d'impero diverso da quelli continentali, un "impero di vele", opposto sia alla rissosa politica comunale e fiorentina, sia a Roma. Per un certo periodo i pisani parvero riuscire d imporre questa idea anche agli svevi di cui i mercanti, i diplomatici pisani furono, secondo Borchardt, più che mediatori, guide illuminate. Testimonianza di questa visione universale di Pisa, quasi anti-Firenze e anti-Roma, sono le opere d'arte, il suo Foro imperiale e cristiano. Lo stile pisano è "il grande stile", stile imperiale. Giovanni Pisano - che Borchardt sente quasi fratello al suo temperamento- è per lui il tragico e felice punto d'incontro e di scontro della passionalità gotica e della misura classica. Da Giovanni e non da Giotto, Dante ha derivato la sua drammaticità plastica. A pisa, già prima che con Dante, si era andato formando anche un primo volgare, imperiale e pratico con le cancellerie, e poetico con la Provenza. Ultimi documenti di questo sogno e stile imperiali, di questa "Causa victa", e di questa imperiale e dinamica solitudine dui Pisa entro l'Italia e entro l'impero, sono il Giudizio Universale del Camposanto e la scultura lignea pisana, che l'A. analizza minutamente. I dettagli, la velatura storica del libro possono essere discutibili o superati: ma questa velatura è investiva da un tale soffio di fantasia e vicoria, da un affetto così insistente e prepotente, che il libro potrà sorprendere anche i più attenti conoscitori della storia dell'arte pisana.
