Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Mass Market in Very Good condition. A sound binding, the pages are unmarked with age tanning. A small sticker scar to the front cover, cover edgewear. "Letters & speeches written at the moment & not organized into a timeless work reveal more of a person's life & thought than any rote biography by an admirer. This is precisely what this book is. It doesn't explain Albert Camus. It reveals him. This is its 1st value. Here we find letters written during the war to a German friend, attempting to sift his love for his country despite its weaknesses & insanities. For himself & France he's tried to judge his own land & culture, to tap its vital bloodstream, discover its worth & thus "absurdly" enter the larger human family. For Americans, the book has an added value." ; 7.2 X 3.9 X 0.8 inches.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Cover art Paul Rand Ilustrador. First Edition. Price NOT clipped, DJ nicely in archival wraps. Stated first American edition with no subsequent printings listed. DJ with mended tear to the spine and wear to the edges; pages dusty with light age toning. Albert Camus (1913 ? 1960) was a French Algerian philosopher, author, and journalist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 44 in 1957, the second-youngest recipient in history. Exile and the Kingdom is a collection of six short stories with an underlying theme of human loneliness and feeling foreign and isolated in one's own society. Camus writes about outsiders living in Algeria who straddle the divide between the Muslim world and France. These works of fiction cover the whole variety of existentialism, or absurdism, as Camus himself insisted his philosophical ideas be called.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Poor. Paul Rand (Jacket design) Ilustrador. First American Edtion. First impression of the first American edition, published by Alfred A. Knopf as a Borzoi book. Translated from the French into English by Justin O'Brien. Portrait photograph of the author by Karsh on the back panel of the dustwrapper. ***Very good in light-blue paper over red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. The gilt has faded and oxidised somewhat over time. Top and tail of spine just slightly creased. Boards clean and unmarked, just slightly faded at the top edges. There is also a patch of fading at the bottom of the spine where the dustwrapper is missing. Edges of page block quite clean, just a bit dusty at the top edge. Internally also very good, with a neat contemporaneous ownership name and date 'James. H. Banks, Jr. 1958' to the front free endpaper. There is some browning at the gutters of the front and back endpapers, otherwise the interior pages are clean. No internal foxing. No creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In a poor good colour-printed dustwrapper which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 3.50 (no $ sign) on the front flap. The front and back panels are largely complete, but the lower portion of the dustwrapper is missing, and the middle portion is present but detached. Plenty of scuffing and creasing to the remains of the dustwrapper (please see scans). ***195mm x135mm. 213 pages plus a Note About the Author and the Type at the back of the book. ***Contents: The Adulterous Woman, The Silent Men, The Guest, The Artist at Work, The Growing Stone. ***'Albert Camus, born 7 Nov 1913 - died 4 Jan 1960, was a French philosopher, author, and journalist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 44 in 1957, the second youngest recipient in history. Camus was born in Algeria to French parents. He spent his childhood in a poor neighbourhood and later studied philosophy at the University of Algiers. He was in Paris when the Germans invaded France during World War II. Camus tried to flee but finally joined the French Resistance where he served as editor-in-chief at Combat, an outlawed newspaper. After the war, he was a celebrity figure and gave many lectures around the world. Camus was politically active. He was part of the Left that opposed the Soviet Union because of its totalitarianism. Camus was a moralist and was leaning towards anarcho-syndicalism. He was part of many organisations seeking European integration. During the Algerian War, he kept a neutral stance advocating for a multicultural and pluralistic Algeria, a position that caused controversy and was rejected by most parties. Philosophically, Camus's views contributed to the rise of the philosophy known as absurdism. He is also considered to be an existentialist, despite his having firmly rejected the term throughout his lifetime.' (Wiki) ***A nice reading copy of the true first American edition of this book of short stories by Albert Camus. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
