Cloth. Condición: Good. Fred Roe Ilustrador. A second edition copy of this work on British history and culture by P.H. Ditchfield. Illustrated throughout by Fred Roe. 'This book is intended not to raise fears but to record facts. We wish to describe with pen and pencil those features of England which are gradually disappearing, and to preserve the memory of them.' (Cha 1., introduction) A lovely, second edition copy of a historical and cultural work on England, describing landmarks and places of interest throughout the English landscape that are disappearing. These include castles, walled cities, mansions, churches, inns, bridges, as well as cultural customs. Heavily illustrated throughout by Fred Roe, with 120+ illustrations. The author, Reverend Peter Hempson Ditchfield, was a Church of England priest, an historian and a prolific author. He is notable for having co-edited three Berkshire volumes of the Victoria County History which were published between 1907 and 1924. This copy contains an ink inscription of a previous owner to the front free-endpaper. Bound in publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, a few marks to the boards and minor shelf wear. Some fading to the spine and chipping at the head of the spine. Previous owners ink inscription to the front free-endpaper. Internally, front and rear hinge are slightly strained but remain firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Scattered spots to the first and last few pages, with the odd spot throughout, but otherwise pages clean. Good. book.
