Keylor, William R., 1944-. Academy and Community. The Foundation of the French Historical Profession. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1975, 286pp., good dust-jacket, a bit faded, very good red cloth. Developed out of a dissertation at Columbia under Jacques Barzun and Robert O. Paxton. Keylor also thanks Rudolph Binion, Arthur Danto, Georg G. Iggers, Bert M.-P. Leefmans, Fritz K. Ringer, Nancy Lyman Roelker, and Fritz Stern for their help. - "Until now there did not exist in print, in either English or French, a study of trench historical science in the crucial period of the professionalization of French historical scholarship after 1870. Professor Keylor's book provides such a study. The importance of the work is two-fold. Professor Keylor not only traces the formation of a "scientific" school of history in France, the rupture of the umbilical cord which had bound history to its parent disciplines of literature and philosophy much longer than in Germany, and the incipient crisis of the "scientific" school by the turn of the century, but he also closely relates the internal history of the historical profession to the ideological and political setting within which this profession functioned. The book is thus an important contribution not only to the understanding of the development of modern historical scholarship but also to the history of the Third Republic." - Georg G. Iggers. 9780674002555 ISBN 0674002555.
