Hardcover. Condición: g- to vg. Ex-Library, Nouvelle edition. Octavos. Vol.1: 400pp. Vol.2: 448pp. Period brown calf with gilt ruling along the edges of the covers and gilt tooling on the spine. Gilt lettering over red and black labels on the spine. A small stamp of "The John Crerar Library" in gilt lettering is at the bottom left corners of the front covers. All edges gilt, detelles and marbled endpapers. Green ribbon markers. This is a beautifully bound early edition of Holbach's influential enlightenment-era philosophical work, originally and famously attributed to Jean-Baptiste de Mirabaud. The back of volume 2 contains a limited table of contents. Among the ideas espoused are that those philosophical materialism, claiming that the universe works as matter in motion, governed by the laws of cause and effect, without need for any sort of deity or supernatural power. Holbach denies the existence of any sort of soul beyond the mind's existence as an function of the brain. The author also discusses the distinction between mythology and theology. Holbach's challenge to religious and social beliefs systems from a moral perspective was seen as an affront to the organized religious power structures and the monarchy, and was the cause for many written reponses in the form of refutations and polemics in its day. The work is known one of the earliest works of modern atheism. Some scholar's believe that Denis Diderot, the enlightenment philosopher and close friend of Holbach, was influential on the work, and may have even contributed in part, to the writing. Text in French. Bindings with rubbing to extremities. Leather on the covers and on the hinges of the spines with some cracking. Gilt decoration on the spines rubbed. The spine of volume 2 is loosening at the hinge. Light chipping to the heads and tails of the spines. Interiors with library bookplates and pockets pasted on at the interior front and back covers. Library ink stamps on the front endpapers of each volume, as well as perforated stamps at the top of the title page and on p.207 of vol.1, and at p. 253 of vol.2. Minor sporadic foxing throughout the volumes. Bindings in good-, interiors in very good condition overall. * The book is known to have actually been published in Amsterdam, contrary to being printed as "Londres" (London). * The final "V" on the publication date in both volumes, seems to have been purposely removed at some point, in order to pass this copy off as an original 1770 first edition.

Rare.

Prima edizione, seconda tiratura. Holbach's All-Out Assault on the Christian GospelsThis is the last of five works listed by the Encyclopedia of Philosophy as being important to Holbach's "second phase" of writing activity which consisted of a relentless militancy against organized religion in general and the Catholic Church in particular. "The theme recurring throughout these books represented a vehement restatement of almost all the arguments for unbelief current in eighteenth-century France. The most characteristic are the following: The idea and cult of God sprang from the ignorant terror of primitive man seeking to placate the destructive powers of nature, and they have survived ever since through superstition; religious history is a catalogue of senseless disputes, intolerance, prejudice, persecution and crime; the clergy is ordinarily engaged in exploiting the gullibility of the people for its own profit; religions have invariably support tyrannical governments to further their own ambitions of domination; Scriptural 'proofs' of Christianity are worthless as objective historical evidence; theological dogmas. FIRST EDITION. Three volumes bound as two with the called-for cancellans following page 110 in volume 3. First Edition (Vercruysse 1776, A4).The cornerstone of Holbach's system of social philosophy, in which he proclaimed a basically utilitarian view of a just society. Here he proposes an alternative system of morality to the one he had actively destroyed in his previous books, especially in his Systême de la Nature. Holbach attempted to derive a morality and an ethic from a completely materialistic and atheistic basis. "In spite of his hedonistic explanation of human actions he saw man a social animal; and indeed it is social utility that is the basis of his ethics." (PMM 215) Contemporary full-leather with double gilt rules on the front and back panels. The spine with five raised bands with gilt labels on red fields and numbers on each volume. A really beautiful copy. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

Oktav (120 x 195 mm). In ausgezeichneter Erhaltung. Kollation: XVI, 288 S.; XVI, 349 (+1) S., 1 Bl. (Corrigenda).

Hardcover. First Edition. A complete 28-volume set of the true first edition of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert's Encyclopedie, comprised of 17 volumes of text and 11 volumes of plates. The text volumes were published between 1751 and 1765, the first seven listing Paris as their place of publication, and the remaining 10 volumes (all released in 1765) stating "Neufchastel". The titlepages of the text volumes include accent marks. These accord with the standard points for a true first edition. All 2,885 of the original plates appear to be present. Some bibliographies count the double-, triple-, etc. plates as multiples (rendering a count of 3,129 plates). The figure "2,885" reflects the numbering of the encyclopedists themselves and represents the total of originally included plates (See Darnton, The Business of Enlightenment). All text volumes are double-columned. All 28 volumes are bound in contemporary tree-calf, with banded and gilt-ornamented spines, and brown leather spine labels with gilt lettering. The textblock edges of all volumes are dyed red. All volumes have marbled endpapers, and (unless otherwise indicated) cloth bookmarks. Shelved in Room C. Sold as is.
