Softcover. Condición: Good. Broken Screen is comprised of informal conversations between artist Doug Aitken and a roster of 26 carefully chosen artists, filmmakers, designers and architects. Part guidebook and part manifesto, the book takes a fresh look at what it's like to create work in a world that has become increasingly fragmentary. Through casual and direct discussions Broken Screen offers a detailed navigation through the ideas behind the important yet under-documented visual language of nonlinear narratives, split screens and fragmentary visual planes that define the most progressive moving images today. Presented in 26 illustrated chapters, the focus here lies on the shattering of the linear narrative in the visual arts through the use of image-based work to articulate the speed and fragmentation of modern life. Perhaps best of all, Broken Screen is a unique opportunity for readers to learn the thoughts and personal beliefs of these artists in their own words and imagery, unencumbered by critical or commercial filters, and communicated in the manner of a conversation between friends. It also seeks to produce a cultural manifesto for new communication, expression and understanding in both the present and future--much as Marshall McLuhan's Medium is the Massage did. With its accessible conversational style, forward-thinking graphic design and over 300 high-contrast images, Broken Screen extends across many disciplines including art, film, design and architecture, and is sure to become an important document of our time. Aitken's 26 interviewees are Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Robert Altman, Kenneth Anger, John Baldessari, Matthew Barney, Chris Burden, Bruce Conner, Claire Denis, Stan Douglas, Olafur Eliasson, Pablo Ferro, Mike Figgis, Werner Herzog, Gary Hill, Carsten Hller, Pierre Huyghe, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Rem Koolhaas, Greg Lynn, Carsten Nicolai, Richard Prince, Pipilotti Rist, Ugo Rondinone, Ed Ruscha, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Robert Wilson and Amos Vogel.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. In This Is Not It, Lynne Tillman's collection of 20 years' worth of important and compelling short stories and novellas, the protagonists seduce you into their lives and thoughts. Engaging, funny, elegant and ironic, Tillman takes the reader to new heights of wit and meaning through staccato phrases, grammatical twists and sensuous language. Familiar worlds of honesty, deceit, dark humor, pleasure, pain, confusion, dependence, love and lust each play decisive roles in her believable fictions. In "Come and Go," three characters and an author collide. In "Pleasure Isn't a Pretty Picture," the reader is treated to a he/she meditation on the one-night stand. And "Dead Sleep" is truly an insomniac's worst nightmare. A twin act on a double bill, This Is Not It is a collection of innovative and stand-alone writing that also engages and matches wits with the some of the best contemporary art: work by Kiki Smith, Jane Dickson, Jessica Stockholder, Diller & Scofidio, Laura Letinsky, Peter Dreher, Roni Horn, Stephen Ellis, Juan Munoz, Vik Muniz, Silvia Kolbowski, Jeff Koons, James Welling, Aura Rosenberg, Barbara Ess, Barbara Kruger, Dolores Marat, Haim Steinbach, Gary Schneider, Marco Breuer, Stephen Prina and Linder Sterling. Since 1982, acclaimed novelist Tillman has created these unique narratives that are a parallel universe to the contemporary art world. Maybe they're analogues or dialogues, maybe fictions inspired by art, maybe reflections, or meditations--but whatever they're called, like Borges's fictions, they are their own worlds, too. Tillman has marked out terrain of her own, which this collection celebrates. Full of life and art, This Is Not It is illuminating, bold, subtle and riotous.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. Mount Zion refers to an Orthodox Jewish cemetery in Queens, New York, built in 1893, sandwiched between a New York City Sanitation plant and the Long Island Expressway. ''Sepulchral portraits'' refer to miniature photographs once placed on many of Mount Zion's tombstones, a custom brought over by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. These images--often heavily retouched--were burned onto porcelain or metal tablets, and then glazed. The process was, at the time, advertised as permanent; but the ravages of the elements, pollution, and vandals have transformed these portraits into something else altogether. What remains of them--and what has become of them--is what John Yang has set out to portray in his own series of photographs, taken between 1994 and 1998. The result is a fiercely moving document, a meditation on morality, memory, the urban landscape, and the photographic process. Much like his subject matter, Yang's photographs are themselves memorials--to Mount Zion, to its urban environment, to its occupants, to the gesture of its sepulchral portraits, and to photography itself.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. John Penor was born 1910 in Bison, South Dakota and he spent all of his life in the same sod house on his homestead where he tended to his horses and cattle. In the 1940s and 50s he photographed the world around him--horses, bison, rodeos, baseball games, town fairs, family picnics and parades down Main Street. He put the photos in a box where they sat for 50 years, until discovered by his grand-nephew, New York-based photographer, Steven Sebring. Sebring retrieved the negatives and had the images printed--letting them breathe for the first time in half a century.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. The man who enshrined a Hoover vacuum cleaner, who suspended a basketball in a fish tank half filled with water, who created a life-size polychromed wooden replica of Michael Jackson and his pet chimp Bubbles, who transferred his sex life with his then-wife, Italian porn star Ilona Staller (aka Cicciolina), onto canvas, and who made a monumental topiary sculpture in the shape of a puppy, is here given a mini-retrospective in the form of a book. Jeff Koons: Pictures 1980-2002 focuses primarily on the formation and development of Koons's paintings, but, given that he considers his early sculptures to be "three-dimensional paintings," this limit need hardly be considered medium-restrictive. Thomas Kellein's extended interview provides a walloping good tale told by the artist himself. In it, Koons remembers his childhood drawing lessons, his first sale (his father had a decorating business and showroom where he would display and sell his 11-year-old son's art), his experiences at art school, his courtship with ex-wife Cicciolina (they fell in love after he hired her to make his Made in Heaven series), and how the birth of his son inspired his Celebration series, all the while sharing his philosophies on art. Organized chronologically and with an extended biography and bibliography, Pictures presents each of the main works from Koons's painting series from 1980 to the present.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. Strippers, internet pin-up girls, ex-girlfriends, fellow artists and even a few fictional females help form the cast of twenty-first-century characters in Zak Smith's Pictures of Girls. According to the catalogue for the 2004 Whitney Biennial, Smith's stylized portraits and acidic abstractions intimately capture stillness in an ever-encroaching world [with] a deconstructed neo-punk aesthetic conversant in comic book-style drawing, vivid psychedelic coloration, experimental photographic processes and traditional draftsmanship. The core of this monograph--the artist's first--focuses on Smith's best-known work, his candy colored paintings of female friends. These young faces, depicted with uncanny precision, stare out from the detailed clutter of complex lives in painting that combine wildly disparate aesthetic modes. Photocopy-like photorealism collides with oversaturated expressionism. Jagged graffiti-like lines and a patterned intricacy compete with the horror vacui of Persian miniature painting. Pictures of Girls also samples a wide variety of Smith's large-scale drawing projects, including selections from the ground breaking Pictures of What Happens on Each Page of Thomas Pynchon's Novel Gravity's Rainbow, the experimental 8 Variations, Drawn, Then Painted On, Then Painted, created using hybrids of drawing, painting and photochemistry as well as the tiny, erotic, jewel-colored paintings that make up his most recent project, the decadent and obsessive 100 Girls and 100 Octopuses.
