Hardcover. Condición: used. Our perceptions of children are only too often distorted by our inclination to project grown-up fantasies of innocence and naivete onto them. Working with children, American photographer Wendy Ewald reveals the lucidity and precision of their powers of observation, gently but assuredly overturning cherished notions of childhood as a paradise lost. In Secret Games Ewald leads you into a world that is as eerie, haunting and threatening as it is joyous and mischievous-life as children really experience it. In 1969, when Wendy Ewald taught photography to children for the first time on a Native American reservation in Nova Scotia, she was stunned by how astute and beautiful their photographs of the environment they were growing up in were. Moving on to the Kentucky Appalachians, she continued working with children, combining her own photographs with the children's photographs and writings. For the past thirty years she has worked with children and women all over the world. Secret Games offers a comprehensive overview of Ewald's collaborative works, with in-depth texts by Ewald tracing the evolution of her work and the ideas guiding it.

Hardcover. Condición: used. 1982, 1988, 1997: six years, nine years, and fifteen years lie between these three dates. The cold war is over, the iron curtain has dropped, governments have been replaced, new governments are in power, globalisation dominates the planet, neoliberalism is spreading, and private worlds are becoming ever more public. But, in the meantime, women have given birth, people have lived and died, loved and hated, married and divorced, made friends and lost them.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Scalo Ed. Swiss artist Hannah Villiger (1951-1997) was trained as a sculptor and always considered her work sculpture. Her artistic medium, however, was photography. In the early-1980s Villiger's own body became the focus of her work: it appears fragmented, distorted, twisted beyond recognition. Villiger developed her own unique way of working: Polaroid shots that she enlarged to a size of approximately one square meter (40 x 40 inches). With the Polaroid camera she circled around her own body using the straightforwardness of the medium. The "blindness" of the camera redefined the structure and the volume of her body parts. This first international monograph, with catalogue raisonné, reveals Villiger as a radical predecessor of many of today's artists who create images of their own bodies. In her in-depth essay Claudia Spinelli traces the outlines of Hannah Villiger's personal and artistic development and poignantly examines the crucial relationship between Villiger's life and her work. Griselda Pollock's essay takes a close look at Villiger as a woman and an artist, highlighting the visionary power of the work. Pollock lucidly discusses the problems and obstacles Villiger, as a female-identified artist, had to face in a phallocentric, patriarchal visual culture. David Levi-Strauss ponders the intricate relationship of sculpture, photography and the human body in the work, whose daring and radical formal concepts and innovations remain as cutting-edge as ever.Edited by Jolanda Bucher and Eric Hattan. Essays by Jean-Christophe Ammann, Bice Curiger, Annelie Pohlen, Griselda Pollock, Claudia Spinelli, David Levi Strauss and Hannah Villiger.150 color and 300 b&w.9.5 x 12.5 in.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. This past year Boris Mikhailov joined the ranks of William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman, and Robert Frank as the recipient of the prestigious Hasselblad Award, confirming the international stature and critical acclaim he has earned in the last few years with one-person exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, London's Photographer's Gallery, and the DAAD Gallery in Berlin as well as representation in major international surveys such as the Carnegie International. His first book, "Unfinished Dissertation", was published by Scalo in 1997, on the occasion of his receipt of the Albert Renger-Patzsch Prize; in 2000, he published his second book with Scalo, "Case History", and was awarded the photo book award of the International Festival for Photography in Arles, France. Mikhailov also recently accepted an invitation to teach at Harvard University beginning in the fall of 2000. This new book contains a never-before published series of work from the early 1980s: Mikhailov photographed ''The Dancers'' in his hometown in the Ukraine during a period when the former Soviet Union was a reality, before the appearance of Gorbachov and "perestroika" We observe the open-air dancing scene with great astonishment; seeing older and younger people enjoy themselves in a way that might be contradictory to the images we might have about everyday life in the old Soviet Union. These cheerful images remind us how little women and men need to have a good time. An essay by Russian art critic Boris Groys and an exhaustive interview make this volume a must have for readers and libraries interested in contemporary art and photography. Hardcover, 144 pages, 9 x 10 inches, 65 duotone illustrations.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. Robert Frank not only ranks among the most important of living photographers but is also widely recognized as a seminal figure in the development of experimental cinema. And yet, the continuity and consistency of his work in both photography and film has been barely explored. "Hold still-keep going" fills this obvious void by illustrating and analyzing the underlying aesthetics that have guided Frank's work in both media. From the very outset of his career, Frank distrusted the single photographic image and its claim to freeze moments of truth: time and again he gravitated to the moving image and serial photography, be it in book form or as a panel of photographs. Reproducing more than 100 collages, film stills and serial works, this volume will certainly become a new standard publication on Robert Frank, innovative photographer and experimental filmmaker. The book also contains an illustrated bibliography and biography featuring dozens of previously unpublished images of Robert Frank, his family and his friends. Published in conjunction with a major traveling exhibition, this is an essential addition to all photography and film collections.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. This book is the harrowing account by Eric Stover, with photographs by Gilles Peress, of how, from a hell of mud and decomposing bodies, Haglund began to piece together the victims' identities and the terrible ways they died. Over 40,000 Muslim refugees were living in and around Srebenica when it fell to the Serbs, under General Ratko Mladic in July 1995. Of the men who fled, or were rounded up by Serb troops, many were never seen again. Stover talks to the surviving families, women and children including the women of Srebrenica still clinging to the hope that their men are alive even as Haglund's investigations prove otherwise. Mladic has since been charged with crimes of genocide. But Stover identifies a lack of political will to arrest the criminals and bring them to trial. Until then, justice will not have been done.
