Paperback. Condición: Very Good. At the age of 48 Moritz Thomsen sold his pig farm in California and joined the Peace Corps. For the next four years he lived in an impoverished village on the coast of Ecuador; its inhabitants were so poor that six chickens represented wealth, and cigarettes were bought one at a time, on credit. Thomsen discovered how difficult it was for an outsider to help, and most of his attempts were a mixture of tragedy and farce. This did not prevent him from entering into the hearts and minds of an alien people, becoming "just another person in a poor village, working out my own problems and frustrations, making friends and enemies like one more citizen of the town". The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

He worked in two locations on the Ecuadorian coast. He really gets to understand what is is like to live as a poor person and the problems of anyone bettering themselves, including the problems of them thus ostracizing themselves from the rest of the community. The latter town is wracked with petty jealousies and shifting friendships, and the problems of holding a collective farm together are enormous. Ref UUU 1.
