Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. A very good copy of the stated second edition of 1967. The binding is tight and sound. The wrappers are generally clean and show only minor edgewear and very light reading creases to the spine. There is a small scuffed area to the front face where a label of some kind has apparently been removed. Inside the ffep has what looks like an owner's signature which has been neatly covered by green felt tip. There are a few reader's annotations sprinkled throughout the text. An excellent reading copy of this essential insight into US-UK-USSR foreign relations during World War II.

Mr. Feis traces the ideas and purposes which governed each member of this alliance, their clashes and cooperation, and the gradual separation between the West and Russia as victory over Germany was achieved. While adding new information and new interpretation, Mr. Feis comprehends this "one war and three wills" as a whole, relating diplomacy and strategy to each other against the background of circumstance. The acts and characteristic attitudes of the dominating figures~ Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin~emerge in new historical perspective as the story tells what they did and why. The narrative begins early in 1941 as the coalition is emerging and ends after the collapse of Germany in 1945. Among the elements are: the early grasping of the Soviet government for territorial claims; the continuous discussion over strategy ( the war in Europe or the Pacific first? the landing in North Africa or the invasion of France?); the dramatic difficulties with the Soviet authorities over control of Italy, Poland and Rumania; the variations in the plans for Germany, including dismemberment; the Casablanca, Moscow, Cairo, Teheran and Yalta Conferences; the preliminary reports of and prospects for the atomic bomb; the evolution of the concept of the United Nations; the spreading disquiet in the spring of 1945, as Germany's defeat was being accomplished, over Soviet intentions in Europe and the Far East. Mr. Feis has drawn up his tale from a wide range of published and unpublished sources; chief among them are the papers of W. Averell Harriman, who was first in London in charge of many elements of our wartime cooperation with Britain and then, from October 1943, United States Ambassador in Moscow; and also pertinent State Department records. As the author of The Road to Pearl Harbor and The China Tangle, Mr. Feis has shown his skill in conveying the flow of great events with coherence and clarity. He writes from a diversity of experience as a former member of the State Department, special consultant to three Secretaries of War, a member of the Institute for Advanced Study, and other university and government assignments.
