Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - ¿Eugene Onegin¿ is a novel written in verse by Alexander Pushkin (1799¿1837). Pushkin was a Russian playwright, novelist, and poet of the Romantic era often hailed as the greatest Russian poet and father of modern Russian literature. Born into the nobility, his first poem was published when he was just 15 years old and by the time he left university he had garnered considerable acclaim for his literary endeavours. Pushkin died from wounds sustained in a duel with Georges-Charles de Heeckeren d'Anthès, his wife's alleged lover and brother-in-law. A timeless classic of Russian literature, ¿Eugene Onegin¿ is made up of 389 fourteen-line stanzas of iambic tetrameter with an unusual rhyme scheme, which is now known as ¿Onegin stanzä or the ¿Pushkin sonnet¿. Set in 1820s Russia, the story revolves around the lives and loves of three men and three women, exploring the relationship between fiction and real life together with the deadly inhumanity of social convention. ¿Eugene Onegin¿ is a riveting and suspenseful tale full of philosophical digressions with a satirical slant that will not disappoint lovers of Russian literature. Ragged Hand is proud to be republishing this classic novel now in a brand new edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author. Translated from the Russian by Henry Spalding.

Condición: Near Fine. First English language edition. Translated by Lieut.-Col. Spalding. A Near Fine copy of this scarce and important work. Original green cloth with bright gilt on the spine and front panel; brown-coated end papers; octavo: xxiv, [4], 276. Slight foxing on the preliminary and terminal leaves, a previous owner's name on the title page, otherwise a lovely copy overall. Generally considered the greatest Russian poet, Pushkin is credited with founding modern Russian literature. Eugene Onegin is Pushkin's only novel, written in iambic tetrameter. A keystone to the canon of Russian literature, it has been credited with providing numerous writers of the period with a prototype for their youthful protagonists. Focused on a selfish hero whose life ends in regret following his egotistical rebuffing of a virtuous young woman and his careless entry into a duel with his closest friend, Eugene Onegin also provided a plot for one of Tchaikovsky's celebrated lyric operas. Near Fine.

First edition in English of Pushkinâs masterpiece, Eugene Onegin, a cornerstone of Russian literature. Octavo, original cloth, gilt titles to the spine, gilt tooling to the front panel. Translated by Lieutenant-Colonel Spalding. In near condition with a touch of rubbing. First editions are scarce. Alexander Pushkinâs Eugene Onegin, his unique ânovel in verse,â introduces a â14-line stanza, with an intricate pattern of masculine and feminine rhymes,â and is valued by the Russians âbeyond any other work of their most cherished writer⦠Like Stendhalâs Rouge et Noir, which appeared about the same time, the Russian work was a pioneer effort⦠It marks the beginning of Russiaâs literary maturity⦠The poem is Pushkinâs major performance and the one which gives the fullest measure of his geniusâ (Avrahm Yarmolinsky). Basis for the opera by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, which was first performed in Moscow in 1879. It was the basis for the 1999 film Onegin directed by Martha Fiennes, starring Ralph Fiennes, Liv Tyler and Toby Stephens. Martha Fiennes received the Best Director Award at the Tokyo Film Festival and the London Film Critics Circle's award for Best Newcomer. It was also nominated for Best British Film at the British Academy Film Awards and Liv Tyler received the Golden Aries prize for Best Foreign Actress from the Russian Guild of Film Critics.
