Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. [Stated first edition] Hardcover and dust jacket. Shelf wear. Some tears to jacket. Good binding and cover. Foxing to edge. Clean, unmarked pages. Paul Robeson was the epitome of the 20th-century Renaissance man. He was an exceptional athlete, actor, singer, cultural scholar, author, and political activist. His talents made him a revered man of his time, yet his radical political beliefs all but erased him from popular history. Today, more than one hundred years after his birth, Robeson is just beginning to receive the credit he is due.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: fine. First edition. First edition/printing. Fine (tiny red dot top edge) in fine dust jacket. Hardcover. xiii+ 804 pp. with index. Illustrated with photographs. Full scale biography of Paul Robeson (1898-1976), a major American figure, the great black singer and actor who was perhaps the most pasionatly outspoken advocate of racial equality of his time. Son of a former slave, Robeson attended Rutgers where he distinguished himself both as an All American athlete and a Phi Beta Kappa scholar. During the Harlem Renaissance, he became a foremost interpreter of spirituals. On dstage , he moved from the title role in O'Neill's "Emperor Jones" at the Provincetown Playhouse to his eventual triuphant performance on Broadway as Othello. Though his prodigious talents might have allowed Robeson to bypass the pervasive racial injustices of the time, he chose instead to challenge them head on; as aerly as his mid thirties, he searched for artictic vehicles that would meaningfully reflect his African heritage. After World War II, he beacme a person of interest for both Senator Joe McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover's FBI both nof whom viewed him as a Soviet apologists. In 1950, he was effectively cut off from his international audience when the State Department revoked his passport. In his final years, his health and career both broken, he was forced to the sidelines of the civil rights struggles of the 1960s and early 70s.

Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. "If Paul Robeson had fulfilled the role that American society had prepared for him - that of a patriotic token, lecturing the underclass of his time about their 'slovenly' habits and exhibiting by his efforts that with hard work and determination one could achieve anything in this land of opportunity - he'd probably still be around, delighting audiences with his spirituals and playing 'Othello' in his old age. But Robeson broke out of his role. He chose to use his celebrity status as a platform for speaking out against the injustices of the oppressed all over the world, and especially of blacks at home. For his efforts, he was hounded by his enemies into physical and mental breakdown; and, in one of those Orwellian ironies that black life in America accumulates, this man, who was persecuted from the early '40s until his death in 1976, was diagnosed as having a persecution complex." - Ishmael Reed.
