(January 12, 2005), the world’s largest online marketplace for books with more than 60 million books listed for sale on its five international websites, has partnered with Brodart Book Supplies, the largest supplier of book care products, to help booklovers care for the books they buy and sell.

To help customers prolong the life and value of the books bought and sold on their marketplace, AbeBooks is working with Brodart to provide special discounts and product offers to its network of more than 12,500 booksellers, as well as helpful tips and educational advice on book care.

AbeBooks will also provide Brodart book jacket covers as a gift-with-purchase from selected booksellers in February, and give away branded samples from the booth at the UCLA Festival of Books in April.

“Clearly the protection, proper cleaning and repair of books increase their value for booksellers, as well as for buyers. We’re excited to be working with Brodart because they are the leaders in their field, and we want to help our booksellers obtain the high quality products they need to care for their books. We also want to help our buyers learn about book care. It’s not unusual for our customers to spend thousands of dollars on a special book, and there are simple ways to greatly enhance the lifetime value of their collections,” says Lisa Stevens, VP of Marketing for

Brodart’s VP for Book Supplies, Franck Chenet, adds: “For more than 65 years Brodart has been a leader in book care education, and we are redoubling our efforts to bridge the gap between the average booklover and the conservationists. Book care can be simple, easy and fun.”

Historically, most booksellers have not formally advised customers on book care, and this unique partnership likely marks the first time a book-care project of this scope has been undertaken. The Internet has also increased the number of times a particular book may be bought and sold. Book care advice is available to all site visitors via the Rare Book Room at and will be updated regularly by both companies.

Since the condition of a book largely determines its price, it is estimated that even minimal care such as cleaning with the appropriate products, protecting the fragile dust jacket with a plastic cover, and correctly taping and gluing damaged books can substantially increase its value.
